If you aren’t familiar, RAID Events LLC is a company that puts on obstacle course race events and Urban RAID, the city based circuit, will put on its first ever event in the heart of downtown Boston.

The RAID Series offers participants unprecedented access to unique Urban, Beach and Mountain environments. Catering to cross training athletes, fitness enthusiasts and recreational runners, the RAID Series has focused on the racer experience and athletic performance, resulting in a groundswell of excitement in the racing community.

Taking place on July 27th, the obstacle course will begin in City Hall Plaza and racers will wind around Government Center before a circuit through the Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Racers will find themselves back at City Hall for the signature finish in the middle of the Plaza. By the time they reach the finish line, racers will have completed more than ten custom built obstacles constructed along the 3.1 mile course.

Afterwards, the RAID Series Festival will take place complete with music, refreshments and the opportunity to sample products from event sponsors like Core Power!

We’ll have more news on this event as it draws nearer, but for now, registration is now open for the Boston event and you can sign up here either as an individual or a team. Core Power is honored to be partnering with RAID Events for this one of a kind race and stay tuned for more info!

That’s why we run, right?

But did you know there are some common misconceptions about cardio that may be keeping you from seeing the results that you’re looking for? Shape Magazine put together a great post called ‘8 Cardio Myths That Are Making You Fat’ to help you lose more weight and make our cardio workouts more effective.

As always, we’ll share a few of them here, but be sure to head over to their site and check out the rest of these great tips!

Skip Strength Training and Focus Only On Cardio

All cardio and no strength isn’t just boring, it may cause you to burn fewer calories overall. “Strength training builds lean muscle mass, which both increases your metabolism and decreases fat,” says celebrity trainer Elizabeth Hendrix Burwell, co-owner of High Performance Gym. “So the more muscle you build, the more calories you burn on a day-to-day basis.”

Do Cardio First, Then Hit the Weights

This age-old question is about as common as the chicken-or-the-egg conundrum: Should you start with cardio or strength training? “If you’re hitting the treadmill for an intense cardio session and then plan to hit the weights afterward, you’ll have little left in your tank to make your resistance training count,” says Lindsay Vastola, a certified trainer and founder of Body Project Fitness and Lifestyle. When it comes to doing a full, high-intensity cardio session and an entire resistance training workout, perform each on separate days, Vastola says, so you can give both your all and burn more calories in the process.

Doing Cardio on an Empty Stomach Burns More Fat

You can’t drive a car without gas, so why expect something different from your body? The trouble with this theory is that the large muscles that power you through your cardio exercise rely heavily on a combination of carbs and fats for energy. When you run or bike on an empty stomach, your body will turn to the carb and fat fragments in your bloodstream and muscle stores, not to the fat in your fat cells to energize your workout, says Michele Olson, Ph.D., professor of exercise physiology at Auburn University. This strategy could completely backfire, she adds, as you may become hyperglycemic and low on hydration, which can cause you to cut back on the intensity or stop before you’ve put in the 40 to 50 minutes research has shown is necessary for your body to burn fat.

Here’s a better question: Do you know what celiac disease is?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that damages the villi of the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. Essentially, the body is attacking itself every time a person with celiac consumes gluten.

When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the finger-like villi of the small intestine. When the villi become damaged, the body is unable to absorb nutrients into the bloodstream, which can lead to malnourishment.

Left untreated, people with celiac disease can develop further complications such as other autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, and cancer. Sadly, there are about 83 percent of individuals living with this disease and they don’t even know about it.

Core Power is gluten free and we’d like to show you some ways you can lend a hand to help raise celiac awareness. Check out these very cool and informative sites and be sure to pass them along to family and friends!

Being a Chicago-based company, Core Power always tries to stay active with events in the community; especially when it’s for a good cause. On Saturday, May 4, Core Power was an official sponsor for the 2013 Chicago United Hoops Classic.

The event is a high school all-star game that pits some of the best players from the South side of the city versus players from the West side of the city. The goal of the game is two-fold: Promote awareness about the violence that plagues many of the communities in this city, and with the help of the athletes themselves, taking the non-violence message back into their communities in an effort to stop the senseless violence.

The game itself was an exciting affair as the South Side team snagged its first win in the three-year history of the event. Also, local heroes in the Chicago community were honored such as Jabari Parker who will be playing basketball at Duke University next season and his father, Sonny, who has long been a fixture on the basketball scene in the city.

And while we were there, Core Power received LOTS of love! We were the official beverage distributed to the players at halftime, both teams loved it — and so did the spectators — and we also got a cool mention in a write-up on NBC Chicago as well!

We’re happy to know that our product was well received and we’d like to thank the organizers of the Chicago United Hoops Classic for giving us an opportunity to be a sponsor, and we look forward to continuing the relationship!

We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about the product and our brand on both our Facebook and Twitter pages and we’re happy to say that it feels good to be “home.”

In case you aren’t aware, Core Power has its roots in West Texas and New Mexico. To explain the history further, Brandon Bouma – a member of Select Milk Producers, the co-op that supplies the fresh milk that Core Power is made with – went on the James Hunt Radio Show on KGNC-AM out of Amarillo, TX.

In the interview, Brandon gives you an in-depth look into the relationship between the Select Milk Producers co-op and Core Power, the principles we stand by — sustainability, traceability, transparency, animal care and comfort — and most importantly, the relationship between our brand and the Coca-Cola Company.

Deryck van Rensburg, President and General Manager of Venturing and Emerging Brands at the Coca-Cola Company says of the relationship with Core Power, “At The Coca-Cola Company we strive to provide people with a wide range of beverage choices that meet every occasion and lifestyle need. With Core Power, we see much more than a post-workout recovery drink. Core Power is a delicious tasting protein drink made with natural ingredients, one of which is real milk – which provides a great opportunity to share value-added dairy beverages with our consumers.”

Core Power was also featured in articles appearing on MyPlainView.com and LubbockOnline.com, and also a television feature on News Channel 10 in Amarillo.

Paul Kim, a certified personal trainer who in just nine months totally transformed his body by taking his body fat count from 17 percent to five, developed the Alpha Trainer personal training app that launched on the Apple iTunes App Store for iOS users, and on the Google Play store for those with Android devices.

The app can be used to create a personalized 14-week training plan, and can customized to fit user’s individual workout needs. It even allows you to focus on workouts for certain areas of your body such as your midsection or your thighs. Additionally, the app also has a social motivation feature that allows you to invite friends who can then give you encouragement with each achievement, and it even has exercise demos from Kim himself, who was a 1999 runner-up in the Mr. Korea bodybuilding competition .

“This is something that I believe passionately in,” Kim said in an interview with VentureBeat. “I came up with this as I did my own body transformation.”

Alpha Trainer is free for the first four-weeks of your customized 14-week training plan. After that, you can buy an “Elite” subscription to finish up your program. Still, four weeks is more than enough time to see a change in your body and if you do, it’s certainly worth making an investment in the app to finish up your plan.

Make sure you check out Paul Kim’s blog for more great fitness workouts and tips!

Well, funny you should ask – there are LOTS of exciting things are happening in Coopersville – and Core Power is at the center of it all.

Core Power is made with milk from our farms in the high plains of the Southwest and then produced in Dexter, NM before it is quickly shipped to Joplin, MO where it is bottled and readied for shipment to stores. But with demand for Core Power on the rise, nationwide, we need to be able to produce it in the middle of the country as well. Enter Coopersville! When this manufacturing plant that is being built in there is up and running, we will also be manufacturing and bottling Core Power using milk from our farms in the Midwest as well!

The building of our Coopersville facility is getting all kinds of attention these days – not only will the new plant over time create around 133 jobs but we will be receiving $1.3 million in state and local funding to rebuild a road leading to the facility. Good roads not only lead to good jobs but they pave the way to more Core Power for YOU!

The Michigan Department of Transportation will give $903,852 for the new road and $400,000 will come from the Ottawa County Road Commission and the City of Coopersville itself.

If you live in the Grand Rapids area and want to apply for a job at the new plant, we’re hiring for 42 positions right now and are hosting a job fair this weekend – click here for more information about the fair!

We’re truly excited to be a part of this economic boon in Eastern Michigan and we’re looking forward to being an integral part of the Coopersville community.

Stay tuned to the blog, our Twitter account and our Facebook page for further developments in Coopersville!

Two bombs that went off near the finish line marred the city’s signature event, the Boston Marathon.

Lives were forever changed that day as people lost their loves and hundreds more were seriously or critically injured as a result of the blasts. But despite such a horrific event, Bostonians showed strength and resolve and vowed to not let an act of terrorism frighten them and change who they are as a city and as a community.

Yes, those who were involved and responsible will face justice, but it doesn’t end there. The City of Boston and its residents still need your help in getting things back to normal.

So we’ve compiled a list of ways you can stand in solidarity with the city and its residents and help out because even if this tragedy didn’t affect you directly, it still affects us all.

Donate to the Sean A. Collier Memorial Fund. MIT has created a Sean A. Collier Memorial Fund that will support a Collier Medal that will be awarded to individuals who demonstrate Collier’s values.

Donate to the Boston First Responders Fund The fund is being administered through the Boston Fire Fighters Credit Union, 60 Hallet St., Dorchester, MA 02124. Checks and electronic donations are welcome. Visit http://www.bosfirecu.com or call 857-220-0133. All of the funds collected will go to the victims of the attack.

Need mental health assistance? The Red Cross is urging people with mental health concerns to visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. “We call it disaster mental health, but I call it well-being,” said Kat Powers, director of communications for the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts. “If you’re having difficulty, reach out.”

How to donate to victim Marc Fucarile A website has been set up for donations to assist Marc Fucarile. It says Fucarile had his right leg amputated above the leg, and has first, second, and third-degree burns on more than half of his body.

How to donate to victim Jeffrey Bauman A fundraising site has been set up to help pay medical expenses for Bauman, who lost his legs and suffered severe burns on his body.

BU scholarship in memory of Lingzi Lu Boston University announced it would form a scholarship in the memory of Lu, 23, from the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang. Click here for details.

Donate to the Richard family According to this Facebook posting, “Anyone looking to make a donation to help the Richard Family can go directly to Meetinghouse Bank or Vargas & Vargas Insurance in Lower Mills. The Meetinghouse Bank has set up account for Richard family to accept donations. Call 617-298-2250 and ask for customer service to get more details.

Another fund has been launched by the Salem Five. According to the bank, Bill Richard is a 1988 graduate of Salem High School. The Salem Five Charitable Foundation said it is making an initial $5,000 donation. Donations can be made at any Salem Five branch or by sending a check to Salem Five, Attn: Richard Family Fund, 210 Essex St., Salem, MA 01970.

Now it’s your turn!
