This year, 1550 participants showed up in Lubbock for the hottest weekend yet. However, the heat didn’t stop these amazing athletes from getting involved in The Buffalo Springs IronMan 70.3.

HoneyMilk was at the events’ expo at the Holiday Inn, and made a quite a splash on Saturday. Athletes were looking for ways to carb up and hydrate at the same time, and Athletes HoneyMilk made for the perfect fit.

The heat was on everyone’s mind, but preparing for the situation was the best way to prevent any pain it might cause the next day. The transitions opened at 4:30 a.m., start time was 6:25 a.m. and three waves were consolidated going from 11 waves down to 8. Athletes were smart by hydrating and nourishing their body to new levels on Saturday. Pineapple or Watermelon and a HoneyMilk were the perfect combination for over 300 athletes Saturday afternoon at the athlete’s meeting.

The course held only 5 non-serious heat injuries out of 1550 starters and the highest percent finishing rate in history. HoneyMilk is so happy to have been a part of this great feat, and can’t wait to come back next year to support these tremendous triathletes.

We’re so proud of our team at HoneyMilk and love to share their stories with you. This latest post on our own Mike Greer comes from the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. Mike, who is getting ready for his Ironman Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3, is just coming off a pretty nasty spill on his bike. Check out the article below for more:

—

Mike Greer claims he’s not a creature of habit, at least not most of the time.

But when it comes to his favorite sporting event of the year, he has as many routines and rituals as the most superstitious athletes around.

Greer, whose Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon will celebrate its 22nd anniversary next weekend, begins growing a beard at the beginning of every June and doesn’t shave it off until the night of the awards ceremony following his event. He also switches from peppermint- to spearmint-flavored gum on race day, and he’s watched the race while riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle for as long as he can remember.

This year, though, the 72-year-old Greer might have to forgo

the latter custom. He’s recovering from a series of injuries he suffered during a bicycle crash on May 25, including a broken rib, fractured pelvis and large bruise on his left hip.

“Right now,” Greer said earlier this week, “I’m not sure I’m going to be able to ride the Harley. My left hip is damaged and my foot, and your left leg on a motorcycle is critical. That’s for shifting and everything. I’m not sure, but my goal is to be on the hog.”

If two of the women in Greer’s life have any say in the matter, he won’t attain his goal. His massage therapist and former secretary, Winnie Clymo, said, “He’d better not” hop on his Harley. Greer’s wife, Marti, said she’s been “begging” her husband to use another vehicle on race day.

Marti Greer has suggested he use a four-wheeler, the scooter she usually rides on race day, or even a horse.

“I told him he could use my (Mazda) Miata,” she said, “but he said that wasn’t cool enough.”

Greer, who said he got his first Harley at age 12, likes riding his motorcycle on race day because it’s an easy way to navigate the 70.3-mile course. He also said the people who attend his race – from all over the state, country and even the world – expect to see his biker side.

“If I’m not on that hog out there, it’s just not right,” he said. “It’s just not the same triathlon.”

Greer is holding out hope he’ll be healthy enough to ride, and those who know him wouldn’t be surprised if he is. His doctor told him it would take eight weeks to recover, but he swam 500 yards exactly three weeks after the crash.

Greer, who is signed up to compete in a triathlon on July 30, said he feels better every day.

“He’s really getting around pretty good,” Marti Greer said.

No matter how quickly Mike Greer recovers from the only injuries he’s had during the couple’s 14 years together, he knows his wife will plead with him not to get on his motorcycle on June 26. But Marti Greer suspects her stubborn husband will do what he wants anyway, and said she knows he’ll be extra careful either way.

Greer is just glad to be as healthy as he is, especially at his age. The one-time college football player has completed more than 300 triathlons during the last 30 years, including seven Ironman races, and will be one of six inaugural inductees into the Texas Runner & Triathlete Triathlon Hall of Fame.

“I’ve just been durable and thankful and blessed,” he said. “Plus, I’ve got an attitude that I’m just going to keep going. That’s all there is to it.”
