Core Power athlete and guest tipster Tyler McCandless is heading back to Kauai today, to get settled in before he takes on the Kauai Marathon on Sunday, this year hoping to defend his 2011 title – a victory with which he set a course record of 2:23:21. This year, he’s shooting to break that record again!

We caught up with him in Boulder, CO, this past weekend, and here’s what he had to say about how his training has been going as race day nears:

Tyler Gives the Shaka Sign @ the Finish Line

We are proud to announce that HoneyMilk athlete Tyler McCandless has recorded his first victory in international competition! This past weekend, Tyler ran the Iwaki City Sunshine Marathon in Iwaki, Japan, taking the lead in the final kilometer and winning by nine seconds with a final time of 2:27:32.

Tyler was given the opportunity to run in Iwaki as a result of his 2011 victory in the Kauai Marathon. For the past three years, both Kauai and Iwaki have partnered to host the victors of their respective races. “It was an honor to represent Kauai in Iwaki, and I am very proud that I could win the Iwaki City Sunshine Marathon”, said Tyler.

What may be most impressive about the event is that Iwaki was one of the many cities effected by Japan’s devastating tsunami just ten months ago. “The Iwaki community has done a remarkable job in the past ten months to rebuild and recover from the tsunami”, Tyler said. “They were very accommodating hosts and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to compete in this international event. Crossing the finish line giving the shaka sign to represent Kauai was a moment in time I will never forget.”

His Facebook and Twitter feeds were alive with updates and support from friends and family. Below is a post right after his big win.

An amazing day at The Kauai Marathon. Won in a course record 2:23:20 with a nice negative split (1:12:30 first half, 1:10:50 second), made $8750, met some terrific new friends, and my phone/facebook/twitter has been going nuts from everyone ‘back on the mainland.’ The support from friends and family is absolutely unreal and I couldn’t be happier to have my first marathon win in Kaua’i! The aloha spirit is unlike anything else. Mahalo everyone!
