The Whey It Is

HoneyMilk: The Archive

Whey protein…you’ve probably heard of it and many of you consume it during the day (like in a bottle of Athletes HoneyMilk). While many are familiar with whey, we wanted to clear up a few questions.

Where does whey protein come from?

Whey proteins are high quality and nutritious dairy proteins. (Yes, they come from the milk not the meat) Milk contains two primary proteins: casein and whey protein. When cheese is produced the liquid whey separates from the ‘curd’ or casein. The whey proteins are then separated from the liquid whey and purified to various concentrations of whey protein. Some products claim to be milk-free, yet have whey protein. We’re not sure how they do it, but Athletes HoneyMilk is made from real milk and is never powdered.

Why should we consume whey?

Whey is widely used among athletes today because of its ability to be digested very rapidly. This allows the protein to become available for muscle building very quickly. Most commonly it is used after workouts (we suggest within 30 minutes) to help increase levels of amino acids in the blood, which are taken up by the muscles to ultimately increase mass. In addition, whey protein improves sports performance by reducing stress and lowering muscle-destroying cortisol levels.

I have some oats soaking in Strawberry Banana HoneyMilk in the fridge right now for tomorrow mornings breakfast. A good dose of whey protein in the morning is a perfect way to start the day and fill you with energy as well as rev your metabolism!
